I spent yesterday in the hospital. Early in the morning (we were sleeping still) mom called to say she was having heartproblems again and that she was going to call the docter at 9. She said she also had problems most of the day on Tuesday and now from Wednesday evening all through the night. She hadn't slept. So, I told San to take her bike to work so I would have the car.
At 9 mom called to say the docter told her to go to the hospital for an ECG, so I went to pick her up and brought her there. She had unstable legs and was feeling a bit dizzy at times. After the ECG we were told to go downstairs to the emergency part of the hospital (where we were last year when she went there in the ambulance). They hooked her up on an IV and had some bloodwork done. We had to wait a long time now because mom had had some breakfast and they wanted to do another cardioversion to get the heart to beat in the right (sinus)rhythm again.
We waited and waited and suddenly at 14:15 the anestesiologist (?) came in with someone with the crashcart behind him and I was told to leave and it was going to happen right away. After hours of waiting that's really sudden! The doc also came back and was surprised to see everyone there already (he was just coming to tell us).
So, I was in the hallway, the door was open and I could see the curtain around mom's bed between the shingles of the door. I heared the long beep from the monitor that indicated her heart stopped. I didn't hear the paddles though. The nurse came out and I asked if I could go in again, she told me: Nooo... and then she went to get a siringe (sp?) and went back in. Then I heared the beep again and another nurse came out and went back in with a siringe. Then the first nurse came back to me to say I could go in. All of this took about 10 minutes.
I came in and mom was still asleep, it was really weird. It's not a natural sleep, I could see her heart was beating so calm and steady now (while it was all over the place before) and her breathing was also slow and steady. The nurse tried to wake her up but she didn't respond. I made a joke about how she hadn't slept so she was catching up now. She responded that it was the medication and anestetics... I know O_o but it was weird seeing my mom like this, just let me break the tension a bit! I went to call my sister to tell her it was ok, they had given her 3 cardioversions because her heart didn't respond the right way the first 2 times (going back in the aritmia instead of the sinusrhythm). That she was still sleeping now and I would call again later. I went back in and mom was still asleep. They tried waking her a few more times before she finally came to. All in all it took about 15 minutes (the cardioversions and sleep).
She started talking right away about how she was dreaming of Spain and that she wanted to sleep more and that she hadn't felt a thing.
It took quite a long time before she was completely awake tho. After 45 minutes she was allowed to eat and drink. I went home to walk the dog and then rushed back. She was already waiting for me by the door when I came back :) We went to her house and had tea. Then I went home.
I called her this morning. She feels ok, tho she's a bit sore and tired. She's also afraid her heart will go back into the aritmia at any time now. We were supposed to go to my grandma tomorrow but she's most likely not coming now. Too busy (birthday) and a long drive. She's taking it easy for now.
Was scary seeing mom asleep there and hearing the monitor beep and nurses telling you you can't go in yet and her not waking up. In Januari when she had the cardioversion they only had to shock her once and when me and my sister came in she was already waking up. This was a lot worse. The anestesiologist also said she was right to come in because her heart wouldn't have gone back to the right rhythm on it's own now as it did on Tuesday.
